The second career woman to be honored as a part of National Business Women’s Week is Teresa Jackson. She was selected by the Grenada Business and Professional Women.
Jackson, who is the mother of two and wife of Michael Jackson, has been principal of Grenada Upper Elementary since 2006.
She is a graduate of Grenada High School. She earned her associate of arts degree with an emphasis in elementary education from Holmes Community College, her bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Delta State University, and her master’s degree in educational leadership from Mississippi State University. She is currently working toward her Ph.D. in  educational leadership from the University of Mississippi.
Before becoming a principal, Jackson was assistant principal at Grenada Upper Elementary for two years and a sixth grade teacher at Grenada Middle School for nine years.
She was named Who’s Who of American Women in 2006-07, National Honor Roll’s Outstanding American Teacher in 2005-06, Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 2004-05 and Educator of the Year at Grenada Middle School in 2001. In 2003, she was nominated for Disney’s American Teacher Award.
Jackson’s professional affiliations include Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Mississippi Association of School Administrators, National Association of Elementary School Principals and the John D. Bower Healthy Schools Network.
Her community involvements include the Junior Auxiliary of Grenada, Pilot Club International of Grenada, Grenada Upper Elementary PTO, Grenada Middle School PTO, Future Educators of America and the Grenada Youth League.
Jackson also devotes her time at Emmanuel Baptist Church where she serves as Girls in Action co-leader, Discipleship Training co-trainer and Vacation Bible School co-director.
“My advice to career women is to seek balance in all areas of your life, enjoy the humor that naturally occurs in everyday life, and take care of yourself so you can always be your best,” said Jackson.
“My most significant accomplishment has been to live out my career dreams in the field of education while living out my life goals of creating a Christian home with my husband and children,” she said.
Jackson said career women must make time to develop relationships, eat healthy, and exercise regularly so “we can be strong and feel well.”
“One of the best ways to serve others is to take care of ourselves so we have the energy to support our businesses, coworkers, families, friends and community members,” she said.
Grenada Upper Elementary was one of only eight schools in the state of Mississippi that received the John D. Bower School Health Grant, which was used to design and implement a Coordinated School Health Program, according to Jackson.
“Being the grant administrator has allowed me to truly lead GUES to become a healthier school,” Jackson said. “The school now has a great outside play area and a fitness room with treadmills, stationary bicycles, an elliptical machine, and a set of aerobic steps with videos for both students and adults. Students use the SPARK physical education curriculum and are allowed to drink water throughout the day.”
