Teachers at Grenada Upper Elementary have taken their supply needs online through the use of a donation Web site that has proved to be successful. The Web site is called Donors Choose, and it helps supply teachers and students with the resources they need for learning through an easy donation process, according to Principal Teresa Jackson. Jackson said teachers make a request for materials needed online, donors give to the project of their choice, and the students benefit. The donor can either choose to remain anonymous, or a thank-you letter will be sent. The Web site, which was implemented by the school in the Spring of 2008, has benefited teachers and students thus far. Those teachers who have received funding for their projects are Dianne Brewer, fourth grade; Melody Shaw, discovery lab; Pam Hammond, fourth grade looping; and Rene Shaw, fifth grade inclusion. “At this time, their are two teachers who have proposed projects, but others teachers may make requests in the future,” said Jackson, “so people interested in making donations should check the site frequently for changes.” Fourth grade looping teacher Christa King has posted a proposal of $418 for six hardback Webster’s dictionaries. Since posting her proposal, King has received funding, but she now only has 14 days left to receive the remaining $208, or the funding already in place will go to schools out of state. King said that by having the dictionaries, she will be able to create innovative and exciting classroom activities that will steer her students into using new words with more precision. Fourth grade gifted teacher Kerry Waugh has a proposal of $502 for seven resource books about Egypt, 10 art aprons, a water monitoring test kit, 10 loupes, a political globe and an electric pencil sharpener. Waugh said the supplies will help her students better understand the world around them. “The Donors Choose Web site is a great way for anyone to make a contribution that will directly benefit the students,” said Jackson.
