Diane Mary Collins Diane Mary Collins, 43, of Gore Springs, died Feb. 22, 2010, at her residence. Memorial services are pending. She was born Nov. 23, 1966, in Hartford, Conn., to Stanley Albert David and Elizabeth Ann Grey Bancroft of Stottville, NY. Mrs. Collins had worked as a certified nurse assistant prior to failing health. In addition to her parents, survivors include her fiancé, Luke Kunefke of Gore Springs, two daughters, Johnese Amber Denny and Jasanda Leigh Collins of Mountain Home, Ark.; two brothers, Stanley Albert Bancroft Jr. of Stottville; Michael J. Shirley Jean Eskridge Funeral services for Shirley Jean Eskridge, 55, of Duck Hill, are at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Sweet Home M.B. Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation is Friday from 1 to 6 p.m. at Clark-Williams Funeral Home. Mrs. Eskridge died Feb. 18, 2010, at Grenada Lake Medical Center of cardiac arrest. She was born on April 11, 1954, and was the daughter of the late Frances Holman. Mrs. Eskridge was a homemaker and a member of Sweet Home M.B. Church. Surviving Mrs. Eskridge are four daughters, Emma Jean Kenny and Willie Jean O’Bryant of Grenada, Leasie Ann Holman and Frances Lerain Eskridge; two sons, Luther Earl Eskridge Jr. and Anthony Louis Eskridge of Duck Hill; a sister, Dorothy Jean Robinson of Duck Hill; a brother, Robert Lee Holman of Duck Hill. Ola Mae Farmer Funeral services for the Rev. Ola Mae Farmer, 57, of Grenada, formerly of Vardaman, native of Calhoun city, are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith Temple Full Gospel Church. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Duck Hill. Visitation is Friday from 1 to 6 p.m. at Clark-Williams Funeral Home. The Rev. Farmer died Feb. 21, 2010, at her home of natural causes. She was born on Nov. 5, 1952. The Rev. Farmer was a pastor at Faith Temple Full Gospel Church. She had also worked at Pennaco and the Grenada County Jail. As a housewife, she enjoyed cooking and gardening. Surviving the Rev. Farmer are her husband, Alexander Farmer Jr. of Grenada; two daughters, Sharon Topps and Marcia Brown of Grenada; a son, Alexander Trevon Farmer III of Grenada; two sisters, Rubie Woodard of Calhoun City and Barbara Chamberlain of Memphis; two brothers, William Johnson and Henry Pratt of St. Louis. She was born on Dec. 16, 1952, and was the daughter of the late Jimmie Lee Ross and Dorothy Pittman Ross. Mrs. James was a member of Battle Temple COGIC, a graduate of Grenada High School, and enjoyed cooking and singing. In addition to her parents, preceding Mrs. James in death are her husband, Jacob James; and one sister, Jacequline Ross Jernigan. Surviving Mrs. James are a daughter, Theresa DeGruy of Kenner, La.; two sons, Marshall Phillips Jr. of Los Angeles and Malcolm Phillips of Grenada; three sisters, Mary Ross McGee and Viola Ross Adams of Grenada, Mary Helen Eskridge of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; a brother, the Rev. Channa A. McCord Funeral service for Channa A. “Channa Bug” McCord, 12, of Grenada, are at 1 p.m. Saturday at First New Hope M.B. Church. Burial will follow in Haven Rest Cemetery. She was born on March 17, 1997, and was the daughter of David McCord of Charleston and Laura Sanders of Grenada. Channa was a seventh grade student at Grenada Middle School, a Baptist, and enjoyed softball and cooking. In addition to her parents, surviving Channa are four sisters, Aras Farmer of Grenada, Kasa McCord and Jenai Johnson of Charleston, Deaonne McCord of Memphis; seven brothers, Quinton McCord of Memphis, David McCord Jr., Quentin Ray, and Daevon McCord, all of Water Valley, D’llanion Sanders and Dazzmone Farmer of Grenada. Sara Faye Clolinger Owen Funeral services for Sara Faye Clolinger Owens, 70, of Holcomb, were at 2 p.m. Thursday at Newsom Funeral Home Chapel in Charleston. Burial followed in Poplar Springs Cemetery in Cascilla. Mrs. Owen died Feb. 22, 2010. She was a factory worker. Max Peacock Graveside services for Max Peacock, 63, of Water Valley, were at 1 p.m. Thursday in Oak Hill Cemetery. Mr. Peacock died Feb. 22, 2010, at Crittenden Regional Hospital in West Memphis, Ark. He was born in Water Valley to the late Alger Elmo and Mary Gaines Peacock. Mr. Peacock worked as a painter. In addition to his parents, preceding Mr. Peacock in death are a sister, Joyce P. Moss and a brother James E. Peacock. Surviving Mr. Peacok are two daughters, Christy Stacks of Saltillo, Miss., and Candis Ross Waddell of West Memphis; two sons, Steven Varner of Elizabeth City, N.C. and Terry Varner of Water Valley; two sisters, Betty P. C.J. Thompson C.J. “Bill” Thompson, 88, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at the home he shared with his wife, Virginia Rocha Thompson, in the Red Hill community. Born Oct. 14, 1921, in North Branch, Mich., to Claire Thompson and Myrtle Spencer Thompson, Bill had a full life as a farmer, military veteran, manager at General Motors and retiree; spending his later years enjoying gardening, repairing small engines, fishing on the family pond and his faith in God. Bill joined the U.S. Army on Nov. 14, 1942, and had a very noteworthy service record during World War II, fighting through two overseas tours in the Pacific Theatre. During his military service, Bill achieved the Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, four Bronze Battle Stars and received a Purple Heart for being wounded in action during the battle for Okinawa. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant during his time in the service. He is survived by three daughters, Shirley Sarles and Angie Thompson, both of Las Vegas, and Julie Reinhardt of Lapeer, Mich.; two brothers, Jim Thompson of North Branch, Mich. and Spencer Thompson of Garden City, Mich.; three sisters, Mary Rocco of Lake Havasua, Ariz., Mae Schlaud of North Branch, Mich., and Marjorie Hagemuster of Marietta, Ga.; four step-children and a host of grand and great-grandchildren. Services were held Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, at Garner-Harper Funeral Home in Grenada with burial following at the Grenada Memorial Gardens. Arthur David Tinnon Funeral services for Arthur David Tinnon, 55, of Tillatoba, are at 11 a.m. Friday at Pleasant Hill M.B. Church. Burial will follow in Lee Cemetery. Mr. Tinnon died Feb. 19, 2010, at Grenada Lake Medical Center of natural causes. He was born on May 22, 1954, and was the son of the late Vernon and Minnie Pearl Tinnon. Mr. Tinnon was a member of Pleasant Hill M.B. Church and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving Mr. Tinnon are his daughter, Lettie Tinnon of St. Louis; five sisters, Margee Tinnon of Memphis, Geraldine Olive, Ann Mae Rockett, Laura Mae Scurlock, and Dorothy Tinnon, all of St. Louis; three brothers, Herman Tinnon of Memphis, Ivory Tinnon and Samuel Tinnon of Tillatoba. Marvin L. Whitaker Funeral services for Marvin L. Whitaker, 57, of Gore Springs, are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Garner Harper Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation is Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Whitaker died Feb. 23, 2010, at his home in Gore Springs. He was born March 30, 1952, in Earle, Ark., to Elmer Whitaker and Edna Lottie Smith Whitaker. Mr. Whitaker joined the U. S. Army in 1969. He was in the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles and prided himself as such. He served a full tour in the Vietnam War and achieved a purple heart medal along with numerous other honors. In addition to his parents, preceding Mr. Whitaker in death are one brother, Carroll Whitaker. Surviving Mr. Whitaker are three sons, Robert Whitaker, Kenneth Whitaker, and Troy Whitaker, all of Milwaukee, Wis.; three sisters, Linda Mitchell of Gore Springs, Martha DeBaere of Rockford, Ill,, and Evelyn Donahue of Ladylake, Fla.; two brothers, James Whitaker of Grenada and Steven Whitaker of Kenai, Alaska; and a host of grandchildren. Delorece Osbarn Winters Funeral services for Delorece Osbarn Winters, 81, of Holcomb are at 11 a.m. Friday at Adams Arbor Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Winters died Feb. 24, 2010. She was a homemaker and the widow of James Winters. Surviving Mrs. Winters are her son, James C. “Jamie” Winters; three sisters, Maureen Winters of Charleston, Bonnie Edwards of Rollingfork, Helen Manley of Greenwood; two brothers, Grady Osbarn of Charleston, Marvin Osbarn of Sardis; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
Catherine Grandstaff Wyman Catherine Grandstaff Wyman, 98, died Feb. 23, 2010, in Grenada. She was born on May 2, 1911, in Mounds, Ill., to Charles Lester Grandstaff and Goldie Arganbright Grandstaff. She graduated from Mounds Township High School as class valedictorian and attended Knox College. She later studied at New York State University (Oneonta), Mississippi State University, and Mississippi University for Women. After her marriage to Thomas F. Wyman on Jan. 1, 1931, she lived in Oneonta, N.Y.; Lewiston, Maine; White River Junction, Vt.; and Mobile, Ala. She was a member of the Junior League of Mobile and an associate of the Florence Crittenden Home of that city. For 50 years she lived in West Point, Miss., and was active in cultural, civic, and religious life. She was a past president of the West Point Junior Auxiliary, the Women’s Missionary Union of the First Baptist Church, and the Music Coterie. She was also a member of the vestry of the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation. Self-taught, she developed a gift for interior decoration and consulted on decorating for Wyman Hotels, Inc., including the Battle House in Mobile. She also planned and oversaw the restoration and redecoration of Elmview, a large 1853 home in West Point. Among her employers from 1966 to 1994 were Goldsmith’s of Memphis, Caldwell Furniture of Columbus, Miss., University for Women, and Ivy Memorial Hospital, Anthony’s Jewelry, Helen Buck Jewelers, and the Treasure Nook, all of West Point. When she was 82 she retired from retail sales and moved to Grenada, where she was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church and the Daughters of the King. Catherine Wyman is survived by two daughters, Linda Wyman of Jefferson City, Mo., and Eloise Portera and her husband Paul of Grenada. She also leaves four grandchildren: Stark Hayden of Atlanta; Paige Logan of Bowling Green, Ky.; Molly Portera of Starkville; and Lee Karen Portera of Cleveland, Miss.; and by three great-grandchildren: Vaiden Logan, Caleb Logan, and John Stark Logan of Bowling Green. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the Parish Hall of All Saints Episcopal Church, with a service to follow at 11 a.m.. Burial will be in the Grandstaff family plot in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens, Villa Ridge, Ill. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Saint Nicholas Treasure Chest.
