Dangerous heat forecast this weekend

Stay cool and stay smart. That phrase is what the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service want people to remember this weekend. High temperatures are forecast to range between 95 and 102 degrees with a heat index or real feel of 101-112 degrees beginning Friday through Sunday around the state.
 

Former Copiah Bank employee sentenced for federal bank fraud

Lindsay Welch, 33, a former account service representative at Copiah Bank in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, was sentenced today in federal court to 27 months in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $250,000 in victim restitution, U.S. Attorney Donald R. Burkhalter and FBI Special Agent in Charge Daniel McMullen announced today.

The portrait of longtime Hazlehurst attorney Ellis Allen Jr. has been added to the Copiah County Circuit Courtroom, where it will be displayed with the images of other late members of the Copiah County Bar Association.  



State Fire Marshal delivers smoke alarms to Copiah County

Copiah County firefighters got some valuable new tools Monday to help them protect the lives and property of the communities they serve. In fact, through their County Fire Coordinator, they received 200 important tools in the fight against fire and fire deaths in the form of free smoke alarms presented by State Fire Marshal Mike Chaney and the State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) Free Smoke Alarm Installation Program.


Volunteer Fire Departments seeking sponsors

Copiah County is blessed when it comes to preparedness for fires and medical calls. We have an enormous amount of support from our country state and county. A county fire department’s yearly money comes from state and county funds – that money is only to be used for fires and fire fighting equipment. It cannot be used for any other equipment, such as: medical calls and repairs to buildings.
