News release from Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce

Applications are now available for the 2010 Lakes Area Leadership Academy where 24 highly motivated, service-oriented individuals will learn about this community, develop new skills and make valuable friendships and connections.

The applications are available at the Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce or may be downloaded at BransonChamber.com/Public/Leadersip_Academy.php . Applications will be mailed to Chamber members. Chamber membership is not required.

The deadline to apply is Nov. 18. Interviews will be Dec. 1 through 4. Applicants who are selected will be notified Dec. 18, and tuition is due Jan. 4. Classes begin Jan. 29 and graduation is April 23.

Participation in the Leadership Academy is a two-year commitment. The first year consists of seven full-day sessions over three months. Year Two involves helping to develop next year’s class and volunteering with a community service organization.

The Branson/Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce began offering the training in the early 1990s, said Bethany Thomas, senior vice president of membership and funding.

"The purpose is to help create leaders in the community by teaching people about life in the Ozarks, the evolution of its history and other factors like how the area is marketed," Thomas said.

Past sessions offered experiences such as touring Table Rock Dam, Branson Underground and Branson Landing during construction. Area historians share memories. A marketing history of the Tri-Lakes is presented. Other topics include government issues, communication skills, environmental quality and community service. And there is an overnight retreat.

Individuals are asked to submit two letters of recommendation with the application. A committee of Academy graduates reviews applications and conducts an interview with each applicant.

Tuition is $350 and covers all costs including the retreat, meals and supplies. One scholarship is available honoring Mark Bass and his wife, Casey Bass, for their dedication to the community.

Laurie Hayes, who chaired last year’s leadership class, said it was a valuable experience. Hayes is business development manager with Rainbow International, formerly A to Z Restoration.

"It allows you to step outside your professional circle, and meet people you otherwise wouldn’t have had a chance to meet, and develop lasting relationships you might not have had," Hayes said.
