Chad Fuqua (City of Hollister photo)

by Greg Brock

Involuntary manslaughter charges were filed late Monday in Taney County  against a man from Forsyth in connection with the death of Hollister Parks Department Director Chad Fuqua.
According to the probable cause statement, Chad Blackston Carter told officers he had been drinking before he made a U-turn in his Hummer of Business 65  in Hollister just after midnight.
Fuqua was driving his motorcycle near to the Hummer when the sudden U-turn was made... Fuqua appearantly had no time to react. Both vehicles were eastbound near the Spirits Shop. Fuqua was taken to Skaggs in Branson where he died about an hour later.   Services for Fuqua have been set for Thursday evening, from 5 to 7 p.m. at The River Church at 10374 East Highway 76 in Forsyth.
City workers are recalling Fuqua as a hard worker who would spend much of his free time working on Hollister's various parks program.  He was the son of Assistant City Administrator Vonnie Mathiesen.

I am saddend by this in many ways.In 1973 my parents moved our family to Kansas.I was 8.My first summer there I met Chad Fuqua. His father was our school principal.I have fond memories of his kind heart. We played together at the school playground while his dad worked. When we moved back to Missouri in 1976 he told me his mom lived here and maybe we would see each other some day.I had not seen him ,however I had read about his good deeds recently and had looked forward to contacting him.My heart breaks for both of the families. I have shed many tears in the last 24 hrs; not for Chad because he is with God who has a plan for him and he is in a wonderful place and awaiting our arrival someday. I ache for Vonnie and Bryan; his father, uncles, aunts, cousins and many friends; the reasons Chad was who he was. We all will experience a large void as Chad impacted so many lives with his vibrant, funloving, compassionate, unconditional loving personality. Chad was a huge part of my life from 1997-2001 when we went our separate ways, but he remained in a very special place in my heart. Our thoughts and prayers need to be with Vonnie and Bryan who will be mending broken hearts for years to come, along with many others, including sweet Pepper, the 4 legged love of his life. God, please provide strength for this incredible family. -Missy Swink

To: The Family of Chad. As a former employee of the parks department, I would like to send my sympathies and let you know that I have very found memories of my time with Chad. This was a man who cared for his community deeply. As an employee I had an accident and he made sure to keep me calm in my time of need, I only wish I could have been there to return the favor. Thank you, Michael Haubert

I only met Chad early this spring but was immediately taken with his honest and sincere approach to everyone he met. As a fellow motorcycle enthusiast I am deeply saddened by these events. My prayers go out to both families.

I've known chad since i was 15. i was always so excited to go through the spirit shop drive through,he always had something to say that was gonna make me laugh. as i grew older, I've had the pleasure of staying connected to chad through friends and my job. those "city boys" and their snacks. this last Christmas eve, we happened to be invited to the same house for festivities. what good times we all had! my heart and prayers are with your family chad. take care up there! we will all miss you!

What a sad time this is for many and what a joyous time for Chad as he has entered heavens gates. I graduated with Chad and had lost touch with him for a while. Recently he showed up at one of my daughters softball games in Columbia and had the opportunity to "catch up" so to speak. He had fell in love with a beautiful woman and her two daughters whom I know very well and I know that not only will his family miss him but so will they. Those of us that had the pleasure of growing up and graduating with Chad will miss him too. He was always a fun loving guy and super with kids and adults alike. Vonnie, if you read these comments please know my prayers are with you and your family. Turn to our Savior for comfort. Know that there is nothing any of us could have done to prevent this from happening. It is not for us to understand why. Take peace in knowing that Chad loved the Lord and was truly a happy man. In my prayers, Jennifer
