Ashley Jones to compete in Miss Hospitality pageant July 30-31

Ashley Jones will represent Lawrence County in the 61st Mississippi Miss Hospitality Pageant, next week at the Saenger Theater in downtown Hattiesburg.
She will be one of 29 contestants competing in the pageant for the title of Mississippi Miss Hospitality and will contend for over $100,000 in scholarships and prizes. The theme for this year’s pageant is "Hospitality is Always in Season" and will feature songs, dance and attire for each season.
The week will conclude with two nights of competition, at 8 p.m. Friday, July 30th and Saturday, July 31st.

Community supporters are encouraged to come to Hattiesburg for the pageant and cheer for Lawrence County’s Ashley Jones.

School board elections to be held in November

Candidates are required to acquire at least 50 signatures from qualified electors from the district in which they are seeking office by the September 3 deadline. Petition forms and more information are available in the office of the circuit clerk on the first floor of the Lawrence County Courthouse.
Qualification for school board members for districts one and two begins August 4 and continues until 5 p.m. September 3. The election will be held November 2.

Historical Society to tour MS Dept. of Archives & History

The Lawrence County Historical Society will tour the Mississippi Department of Archives & History in Jackson on Tuesday, July 27. The group will be leaving the Lawrence County Civic Center at 8:00 a.m. The purpose of this trip is to view micro-film equipment and learn more about digitally preserving invaluable paper documents such as the Lawrence County Press. The Historical Society intends to purchase a new micro-film scanner/reader/printer for use in the Lawrence County Library Public Library. The group also plans to tour the "New Capitol" which was built under the direction of Lawrence County's own Governor Andrew H. Longino. This will be an enjoyable and educational experience. Tax deadline approaching

July 29 is the last day for Lawrence County taxpayers to make their tax payments before their property is listed on the delinquent tax list that is printed in the Lawrence County Press.
According to Lawrence County Tax Assessor/Collector Sherry Thames, the delinquent taxes will be printed in the August 4 edition of the newspaper.
Also, Thames said the land sale for delinquent taxes will be held August 30 and the absolute deadline for paying property taxes before the property goes through the land sale is August 27.
